Today’s issue is 705 words, a 6-minute read

Hey folks, Mateo here.

In this week’s edition of NewPrensa, we’re diving into the stories making waves across Minneapolis, from the chaotic federal operation that drew protests in South Minneapolis, to the powerful student voices behind Culturica 2, and the Lynx’s red-hot start to the WNBA season. We’re covering the stories shaping our streets, our schools, and our sports teams. Let’s get into it.

Confusion and Clashes Follow Federal

Operation in South Minneapolis

A large federal police operation at two Twin Cities restaurants Tuesday morning quickly escalated into protest, confusion, and unrest. Agents from ICE, alongside a long list of federal and local partners, were seen executing a criminal search warrant at Las Cuatro Milpas on Lake Street in South Minneapolis, prompting fears of an immigration raid and drawing a sizable crowd of protestors. Tensions ran high, with pepper spray deployed by officers and physical confrontations between police and demonstrators.

Despite the presence of ICE agents, officials stated the action was part of a broader investigation into narcotics and money laundering, not immigration enforcement. Still, the appearance of immigration agents and the involvement of MPD stirred alarm in a city where both Mayor Jacob Frey and MPD leadership have committed publicly to keeping distance from federal immigration crackdowns. MPD later claimed their presence was limited to crowd control and public safety, but questions remain.

Some protestors on the ground claim they witnessed individuals being detained and removed, while ICE insists no arrests were made. That central contradiction has yet to be resolved, fueling continued skepticism in the community. In the absence of clear information, what’s certain is that the episode reflects a city still deeply on edge about the role of law enforcement and a community quick to mobilize in defense of its immigrant neighbors.

To get a closer look at the aftermath on the ground, watch this video by content creator Nick Shirley, who arrived shortly after the raid. While the video includes footage of the crowd’s physical clashes with law enforcement and captures some important perspectives from those present, please note that the channel and creator do not reflect the views or values of NewPrensa. Still, it offers a raw, on-the-scene glimpse of how the protest unfolded and how community members are processing what happened. Viewer discretion is advised.

Culturica 2: A Celebration of Latine

Youth Voices

Culturica: Issue 2 Cover 📸 Madeline Randall/NewPrensa

Last Thursday, we closed out a year of collaboration, conversation, and creativity with the launch of Culturica 2, a youth-produced magazine showcasing the voices of high school students in the University of Minnesota Chicano & Latino Studies High School Leadership Program. Throughout the year, students met with artists, organizers, and mentors who helped them reflect on identity, migration, and power. In a school year marked by uncertainty and tension, especially for Latine students, their work became a powerful outlet for honesty, resistance, and joy.

The event, hosted at the Liberal Arts Engagement Hub, was a celebration of everything they’ve built. The students shared their pieces, their growth, and their pride. We’ve seen their voices sharpen and their confidence bloom, and we couldn’t have been prouder to have been a part of the journey.

Lynx Undefeated Through

Eight Games

The Minnesota Lynx did their traditional home court victory dance after beating the Phoenix Mercury and remaining undeafted in the WNBA season so far 📸 sporty.com

Last night, the Lynx danced their way to their eighth straight win, beating the Phoenix Mercury to remain undefeated on the season. Napheesa Collier, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, tallied 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead the way for the Lynx. She is off to another incredible start, worthy of early MVP consideration, as she is leading the league in PPG (points-per-game) at 25.1, and right now it’s not particularly close. She is also top-10 in the league in rebounds, blocks, and steals per game. It’s been an exciting start for the Lynx, who will look to face the Dallas Wings for the third time this season on Sunday.
