Hockey History, Healing, and High-Flying Art 🖼️

This week’s edition covers stories
from May 22nd to May 28th, 2025.
Today’s issue is 746 words, a 6-minute read.

Hey folks, Mateo here.

It’s been a week of reflection, resilience, and pride across the Twin Cities. Minneapolis marked five years since the murder of George Floyd with a moving community gathering at George Floyd Square. Just across the river, St. Paul is getting ready to launch a vibrant new art exhibit that brings Mexican folklore to life. Last night, all eyes turned to the Timberwolves as they fought to stay alive in the playoffs. And Minnesota’s own Frost have done it again, winning their second straight hockey championship and setting the tone for what could become a legendary franchise.

Minneapolis Remembers,

the Fight Continues

This past Sunday marked five years since Geroge Floyd was murdered by Minneapolis police, and hundreds gathered at 38th & Chicago (George Floyd Square) to remember his life. The three-day Rise and Remember festival featured music, community care, and a candlelight vigil that filled the streets with prayer, song, and reflection. Floyd’s family urged the community to stay united in the ongoing fight for justice, reminding us that this work is far from over.

Just days later, a federal judge dismissed the proposed consent decree that would have placed the Minneapolis Police Department under federal oversight. Mayor Jacob Frey and MPD Chief Brian O’Hara say reforms will continue, but many are skeptical. For a community still grieving and still pushing for change, it feels like accountability is slipping further out of reach. As one attendee said Sunday, “There is still a lot of work left to be done.” Minneapolis knows that better than most.

Last summer, I had the honor of meeting Olimpia Coral Melo, a Mexican activist whose private video was leaked online when she was just a teenager. It went viral. Her mental health shattered. She nearly took her life. But she rose, not quietly. She mobilized. At 19, she helped introduce legislation in Puebla, Mexico, and sparked a movement that led to “La Ley Olimpia,” a sweeping legal framework now recognized in 28 Mexican states. It criminalizes digital violence and provides victims with legal and psychological support.

Olimpia and her collective, Frente Nacional para la Sororidad, didn’t stop there. Her network of digital defenders helped shape the Take It Down Act here in the U.S., bringing survivor-centered perspectives and real-life urgency to lawmakers who needed to hear it.

Mexican Art This Summer

📸 Minnesota Latino Museum

This summer, Raspberry Island becomes a portal to the fantastical with Alebrijes: Keepers of the Island, a free, large-scale outdoor exhibit running June 1st through October 26th. Presented by the Minnesota Latino Museum, this one-of-a-kind experience features 16 colorful papier-mâché creatures inspired by Mexican folklore, including towering 16-foot alebrijes and smaller nahuales, spirit animals rooted in cultural tradition. Visiting artists from Mexico City will actively maintain and transform the artwork throughout the season, making each visit a little different. Located at the intersection of St. Paul’s Cultural District and Latino Cultural District, this living, evolving art exhibit invites families, art lovers, and city explorers alike to step into a world where imagination takes shape. Don’t miss the ribbon-cutting (happening tomorrow!) or the community celebration on June 14th with live music, food, and family-friendly fun. Learn more at mnlatinomuseum.org/alebrijes

Back-to-Back Champs:

Minnesota Frost Cement Their

Place in Hockey History

The Minnesota Frost are doing more than winning: they are building a legacy. With Monday’s thrilling 2-1 overtime victory over the Ottawa Charge, the Frost secured their second consecutive Walter Cup, making them the only champions the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) has ever known. Local hero Liz Schepers (Mound, MN) sealed the win with an OT goal, etching her name in Minnesota sports lore and giving fans another unforgettable moment to celebrate.

What’s really exciting about this win is what it could mean years from now. As the PWHL continues to expand, with new teams coming to Seattle and Vancouver next season, Minnesota’s dominance in these formative years positions them as the league’s first true dynasty. The Frost are now the standard every new and existing team will measure themselves against. In a league still finding its footing, Minnesota has planted its flag and made history doing it. And for fans here at home, it’s an incredibly cool moment to witness the birth of what could become one of the most influential franchises in pro hockey.

Wolves Eliminated in WCF for

Second Straight Season

Last night, the Timberwolves were eliminated from the postseason following a 124-94 rout by Oklahoma City. The Thunder are now headed to the NBA Finals for the first time since 2012 and will attempt to win the franchise’s first championship in OKC. An important offseason looms for Chris Finch and the Wolves as they look to improve on back-to-back Western Conference Finals losses. Much of the team is expected to return, but as always, there will be roster changes over the summer. Julius Randle and Naz Reid both have player-options, meaning that they can choose to “pick up” their option and return for one more season or decline the option and opt to enter free agency. Mike Conley turns 38 this year, so the Wolves could look to upgrade at the point guard position, as well. Look out for offseason updates in future editions!
