Deals, Donuts, & Diplomacy

This week’s edition covers stories
from November 6th to November 12th, 2025.
Today’s issue is 628 words, a 5-minute read

Hey folks, Mateo here.

The northern lights have danced across Minnesota skies this week, painting the city with color and a rare sense of calm before winter truly sets in. But while the aurora brought wonder overhead, there’s been plenty happening on the ground—from major labor updates to global flashpoints that could shape the months ahead.

This week’s edition of NewPrensa dives into Minneapolis teachers averting a strike with a new contract deal, Target’s move to cut prices on essentials before the holidays, and the sweet return of Krispy Kreme to the Twin Cities. We’re also looking abroad, where Colombia’s peace process faces new strain amid renewed rebel conflict and U.S. pressure, and in the arts, Rosalía’s new album Lux is already being called an “instant classic.”

ELN-US Tensions Escalate

Colombian Peace Risk

Colombia’s largest remaining rebel group, the National Liberation Army (ELN), maintains control over the volatile Catatumbo region, a key drug corridor near Venezuela.

  • The Problem: Peace talks with President Gustavo Petro are suspended due to ELN fighting with FARC dissidents over territory and drug routes.
  • The ELN Stance: Commanders express conditional readiness to talk but confirm taxing coca crops and maintaining a strong regional presence.
  • The International Factor: The U.S. under Donald Trump refers to the rebels as “narco-terrorists” and has not ruled out military strikes in Colombia.
  • The Risk: The ELN views U.S. anti-drug operations and pressure on Venezuela as “acts of imperialism,” escalating a local conflict into a potential regional crisis.

Rosalía’s “Lux” Hailed

as “Instant Classic”

Rosalía’s new album, Lux, is a highly ambitious project blending classical training with global pop, earning immediate “instant classic” praise.

  • The Sound: The album showcases her conservatory training, featuring the London Symphony Orchestra, opera influences (like Puccini’s Tosca), and maximalist production.
  • The Scope: Rosalía sings in an astonishing 14 languages (including Arabic and Ukrainian) and explicitly confirmed the effort was human, not AI.
  • The Personal: The artist confronts deeply personal themes, including an unforgiving breakup track and lyrics on the physical release addressing her broken engagement and declaring self-ownership: “I’ll just belong to me and to my liberty.

MPS Teachers Avert Strike

with Tentative Deal

The Minneapolis Federation of Educators (MFE) and Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) have reached a tentative contract agreement, avoiding a teachers’ strike planned for this week.

  • What They Won: The deal includes progress on key demands, such as:
    • Smaller class size caps.
    • More manageable special education caseloads.
    • Pay Parity: Adult educators will see up to a 30% raise.
    • Teacher Pay: Teachers get a 2% raise this year and next, and will reach the top salary schedule faster.
  • Next Steps: Union members will vote on the contract Thursday and Friday.

Target Slashes Prices

on 3,000 Essential Items

Minneapolis-based Target announced it is immediately lowering prices on 3,000 food, beverage, and household essential items to help consumers facing high grocery costs.

Holiday Boost: Target is also offering its annual Thanksgiving meal for under $5 per person and has donated $500,000 to Feeding America.

The Why: The initiative is aimed at aiding families’ budgets through the holidays and reversing a recent sales slump for the retailer.

Krispy Kreme Returns to the

Twin Cities

After Two-Decade Hiatus

Krispy Kreme has returned to the Twin Cities market, opening a new location in Fridley nearly 20 years after its initial attempt failed.

The New Plan: This time, the company will utilize a “hub-and-spoke” model to sell on-site and deliver donuts to other retailers.

The Hype: The opening drew massive overnight crowds, reminiscent of the 2002 Maple Grove debut which failed largely due to unsustainable sales once the novelty wore off.
